Country and folk music legend Mary Chapin Carpenter is 67 years old and still rocking, captivating audiences with her talents.
“I’ve been obsessed with music since I was a kid,” she shared in an essay for Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Country Music in America. She reminisced about sneaking her older sister’s records featuring The Beatles and The Mamas & the Papas. Her other sister introduced her to Judy Collins, while Bob Dylan and The Band hooked her heart. As for country music, she found joy listening to Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Dolly Parton at home.
With her mother’s encouragement and a guitar in hand, Carpenter pursued her dreams of performing. By 1987, she signed with Columbia Records and entered the country music scene. The ’90s were a big deal for her, as she won five Grammy Awards and became the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year in both 1992 and 1993.
This past year at the Newport Film Festival 2025, Carpenter showcased her incredible skills, treating attendees to an acoustic performance of her classic “Passionate Kisses,” which absolutely thrilled the crowd.
