Get ready, Prince fans! The legendary artist’s concert film, ‘Sign O’ The Times’, is back in theaters, and it’s going to be an unforgettable experience for both sight and sound.
According to Billboard, this beloved film will be shown in IMAX theaters worldwide for the very first time, starting August 29, but only for a week. This exciting news was announced on July 22 through a collaboration between IMAX, Mercury Studios, and FilmRise.
For those who don’t know, ‘Sign O’ The Times’ features Prince not just as a performer but also as the director and composer. Originally debuting back on November 20, 1987, this PG-13 film showcases the Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer live on stage, belting out tracks from his iconic album right after he parted ways with his longtime band, the Revolution.
Even though the movie didn’t do well at the box office initially, it quickly built a reputation and even greater popularity once it was released on home video.
This remarkable album includes huge hits like the title track, which peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, along with other favorites: ‘U Got The Look’ featuring Sheena Easton (#2), ‘I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man’ (#10), and ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’ (#67).
Additionally, the film features a medley combining ‘Little Red Corvette’ with ‘Housequake’, as well as many more tracks like ‘Play in the Sunshine’, ‘Slow Love’, ‘Hot Thing’, ‘Forever in My Life’, ‘It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night’, ‘The Cross’, and even a jazz number, ‘Now’s the Time’, showcasing his extensive talent.
You’ll see Sheila E., Prince’s long-time collaborator, along with former members of the Revolution, including Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, keyboardist Dr. Fink, and drummer Bobby Z., join him in the acclaimed film.
This IMAX release will add a new layer to the experience, as footage combines live performances with scripted scenes, all remastered for IMAX’s stunning audio-visual setup. Expect to be swept away by the clarity and surround sound that promises to resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
While IMAX will take care of the film’s distribution in the U.S., any worldwide showings will roll out through Pathé. Plus, there’s buzz about special invite-only events happening in places like New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis in August, so keep your eyes peeled for updates.
