This week, a national “economic blackout” is being called for, encouraging everyone to limit their shopping to just the absolute essentials.
The campaign is spearheaded by an activist group known as The People’s Union USA.
John Schwarz, the group’s founder, shared with his 500,000 followers on Instagram the message: “Economic blackout. August 9. No spending. No shopping. Nowhere.” You can check out the post here.
Newsweek tried reaching out to Schwarz via email for his thoughts on this upcoming action.
Why This Matters
This year has seen several boycotts against big corporations, many led by The People’s Union and Schwarz himself. These movements are driven by a reaction to companies backing away from their diversity and inclusion promises and a strong feeling of discontent towards corporate practices.
While many experts think grassroots efforts might not drastically change corporate policies, some companies have noticed the impact these campaigns are having on their image and profits.
Key Points
The People’s Union is a grassroots organization that advocates for economic justice and accountability in the corporate world. They’re not tied to any political party, focusing instead on “economic resistance and real justice for working people.” This latest boycott is part of their broader “Economic Blackout Tour,” which targets corporations for various unethical practices, including price gouging and worker mistreatment.
Previously, The People’s Union has organized spontaneous blackouts, the last of which was back in April. Their sights are also set on major brands like Target, Walmart, recently placing emphasis on a “summer boycott” against these companies and McDonald’s throughout August.
In earlier blackouts, shoppers were encouraged to skip shopping, minimize online orders, and avoid visiting fast food spots. For necessary purchases, they should opt for support from local small businesses only.
However, Schwarz has announced that the focus has shifted from just economic expressions to reflecting broader frustrations among everyday Americans.
In an Instagram post from late July, he emphasized: “Don’t shop anywhere. Organize protests where you can, whether it’s at your Town Hall or State Capitol. Take time off work or close up your business. You choose!”
Community Reactions
According to John Schwarz, founder of The People’s Union USA, he recently shared with Newsweek: “The People’s Union USA represents those tired of supporting corporate greed and hollow promises.”
“This is our moment! On Saturday, August 9, we will boycott, protest, and strike,” Schwarz said during a recent video. “We’re looking to make our voices heard loud and clear. No more delays. No more waiting for someone else to take action.”
As stated on The People’s Union USA website: “Money is the only language this system listens to. We don’t need to riot to have an impact. Just by stopping our spending, we can diminish their power. Economic resistance is a peaceful yet potent way to make ourselves heard.”
According to political expert Michelle Meagher, quoted by Newsweek: “Consumer boycotts need to be paired with legal action from governments to really take effect.”
Looking Ahead
The blackout will span for a full 24 hours. After this, The People’s Union USA has planned additional boycotts for September, targeting companies including Amazon, Uber, and Pepsi.
