According to a memo that was leaked to journalist Ken Klippenstein, National Guard members will be in Washington D.C. until September 25. This news comes after President Donald Trump made an announcement on Monday regarding the temporary federal control of the city’s police.
Trump revealed that about 800 Guardsmen would be deployed to make the city safer, which he described as having descended into a state of “lawlessness.”
The memo outlines that the role of the National Guard will be to “protect federal property and functions” and to aid both federal and local law enforcement efforts in the area.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump expressed his concerns about violent gangs and what he referred to as “bloodthirsty criminals” in the capital. He didn’t hold back, going as far as to label Washington D.C. as “one of the most dangerous cities in the world.”
This is an evolving story and further updates will follow.
