ITV has just announced an intriguing new true crime mini-series focused on the victims of John Worboys, who has been d “one of the most prolific sex attackers in British history”.
Titled Believe Me, this four-part drama will delve into the real-life accounts of three women assaulted by Worboys, a man who posed as a licensed taxi driver before earning the unfortunate title of Black Cab Rapist in the media.
Jeff Pope, a Bafta-winning screenwriter, is behind the series and has cast talented actors including Aimee-Ffion Edwards from Slow Horses, Miriam Petche known for Industry, and Aasiya Shah from Bloods. These actresses will portray the women whose lives were forever changed by Worboys’ horrific actions.
Taking on the role of Worboys is Daniel Mays, who is recognized for his performance in A Thousand Blows.
Pope shared insights into this emotional journey, emphasizing the struggles the victims faced as they reported their cases. He highlighted that the lack of belief from law enforcement and the treatment of their assaults being registered essentially as “non-crimes” added another layer of trauma.
The narrative will follow two of the women as they navigate the harrowing process of trying to get their allegations taken seriously by the Metropolitan Police. Their experiences prompted them to pursue legal action against the police forces under the Human Rights Act.
Under the direction of Julia Ford, filming for this impactful series is taking place in Cardiff and is being backed by the Welsh Government’s Creative Wales initiative.
Polly Hill, ITV’s director of drama, expressed her pride in collaborating with Jeff Pope to bring this meaningful story to the screen. She stated, “Too many voices went unheard by the police, which only led to more victims and eventually this landmark legal case against the Metropolitan Police. Jeff’s scripts expertly capture this challenging yet crucial narrative, and I am thrilled to have Julia Ford at the helm of the direction.”
Fans can catch this powerful drama on ITV1 and STV, and it will also be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player.
