In a recent statement, China emphasized that Taiwan is fundamentally an internal issue, following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. During an interview with Fox News, Trump indicated that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him there would be no invasion of Taiwan while he holds office.
Responding to these comments, Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, reinforced that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. “The Taiwan matter is strictly China’s internal concern,” she stated, asserting that the resolution of this issue lies solely with the Chinese populace.
Mao further added, “We are committed to achieving a peaceful reunification, but we will not permit any party or force to dissolve Taiwan’s ties with China in any form.”
China regards Taiwan as its territory and maintains the aim of reuniting with the island, which operates under its democratic governance. Taiwan has consistently rejected China’s claims of sovereignty.
In light of Trump’s comments, Taiwan’s foreign ministry responded by stating that it actively monitors high-level interactions between American and Chinese officials. The ministry also mentioned that Taiwan is dedicated to collaborating with nations that have significant interests in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the Taiwan Strait.
Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties, the United States remains Taiwan’s foremost ally and arms supplier. China asserts that Taiwan is the most critical and delicate issue in its relations with the U.S., and it has never ruled out the use of military force to assert control over the island.
