According to The Hill, this billionaire entrepreneur has a mission: modernizing the digital as well as the physical spaces of federal services.

Not only is he already a seasoned expert marrying tech and design, but Gebbia also holds a position on the board of directors at Tesla Inc. and previously worked with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Under Trump’s recent order d “America by Design,” he’ll spearhead the newly formed National Design Studio.

Major Overhaul Needed for Federal Websites

There’s a huge gap when it comes to usability in federal digital platforms. A fact sheet that accompanied the executive order revealed an alarming detail: only about 6% of the nearly 26,000 federal websites manage to earn “good” ratings for mobile friendliness, while 45% completely lack mobile capabilities.

“I want everyone to feel an experience that represents excellence in our country, while simplifying lives for everyday Americans,” Gebbia shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Comparing his vision to the sleek experience of an Apple store, he emphasized the need for stunning design and a top-notch user experience.

A Three-Year Plan with a 2026 Goal

The newly created National Design Studio will be operating directly out of the White House. Gebbia will report to Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and federal agency leaders must engage with him to roll out necessary design improvements — aiming for measurable outcomes by July 4, 2026.

This interim organization is set to last for three years, targeting websites and physical locations crucial to the daily lives of Americans. Trump’s directive aims to cut down on overlapping design expenses and restore public faith in those handling significant service operations.

Tech Know-How Fuels His Design Mission

Bringing a wealth of tech savvy to the role, Gebbia controls about 7% of Airbnb and boasts an estimated net worth of $8.14 billion, positioning him at 430th globally by Bloomberg‘s assessment. His experience on the graze at Tesla (where he’s been since 2022) and his acquaintance with CEO Elon Musk likely helped him gain this exceptional appointment explained by connections to the Trump administration.
