During a recent conversation, former White House attorney Ty Cobb shared a funny moment recounting his reaction to the FBI’s raid on John Bolton’s residence, leaving NPR’s Steve Inskeep thoroughly amused.
“I just went down and locked my door,” Cobb said with a straight face, prompting Inskeep to burst into laughter. It seems like even those who once worked closely with the president aren’t feeling too secure these days.
Taking a more serious tone, Inskeep pointed out, “So you’re saying that former officials might be feeling a little anxious, right?” Cobb nodded in agreement, expressing his belief that anyone critical of the president should feel a sense of paranoia in the current climate. However, he urged people not to panic too much over the raid!
Shifting the conversation, Cobb offered his take on Bolton himself, who served as Trump’s national security advisor for a significant time yet has found himself in Trump’s crosshairs ever since the release of his tell-all memoir, The Room Where It Happened.
The Department of Justice previously looked into whether Bolton disclosed classified information in his book, even trying to delay its release. However, once President Biden took over, that investigation seemed to stall. But surprise, surprise! Reporters say it’s been reignited, coinciding with the recent search of Bolton’s property as authorities investigate the management of classified documents.
Cobb implied there might be some form of retaliation at play against Bolton for stirring the pot.
He observed, “There’s definitely a break from the usual practices we’ve seen at the Justice Department to restart this investigation.” It’s worth noting that Bolton’s book went under a strict White House review, ultimately receiving the green light from a federal court to hit the shelves. It’s possible they uncover documents they claim are classified. That being said, whether those classifications hold water right now could be contested in court.
Reports Indicate Possible Outcomes for Bolton
Despite the whirlwind of events, Cobb expressed skepticism that Bolton would face any charges. “I see things a bit differently from others who think an indictment is certain for him,” he shared.
