Brutal Stabbing Leads to Life Sentence
David Abara, a 56-year-old man, has received a severe sentence of life imprisonment, with no possibility of getting out on parole, for the brutal murder of Randal Lowery. Honorable Kathleen Sigurdson delivered the sentence on Thursday, tacking on an extra 8 to 20 years due to the use of a deadly weapon in the attack.
The grim incident occurred on June 7, 2023, when Abara was arrested by the Sparks Police and Nevada State Police Parole and Probation in relation to the stabbing. Reports indicate that Abara viciously attacked Lowery, inflicting multiple stab wounds to his face, neck, and arms before leaving him to die at Fisherman’s Park, situated along the Tahoe Pyramid Bikeway Path.
The crime was unveiled when someone passing by spotted Lowery lying in the dirt, engulfed in blood. A review of security footage from the Truckee Meadows Water Authority went on to reveal the shocking moments of the attack, depicting Abara shouting at the victim before delivering the lethal stabs. The footage showed Lowery attempting to fend for himself, ultimately collapsing from his injuries.
During the initial questioning by members of the service-oriented Homeless Outreach Proactive Engagement (HOPE) team, Abara denied being involved. However, detectives from the Sparks Police dug deeper and discovered crucial new evidence which ultimately confirmed his identity as the attacker, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
In a statement from Chief Deputy District Attorney Luke Prengaman, he commended the diligent work of the Sparks Police Department, illustrating how their careful and thorough approach batched together a strong case. Prengaman acknowledged, “This is a great example of how patient, diligent police work can transcend hurry, leading to justice for the victim’s family and a rightful sentence.”
