BRONX, N.Y. — A man from the Bronx has been handed a prison sentence ranging from five to 15 years after fatally stabbing his roommate in 2022, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark. The incident took place early in the morning on March 7, around 7:35 a.m., in their shared apartment located at 1011 Sheridan Avenue.

The attack began as Akino George, 39, assaulted and choked his girlfriend. When his roommate, Edwin Acevedo, attempted to intervene, prosecutors say it escalated quickly.

Acevedo pushed George outside and tried to secure the safety of his girlfriend by locking the door. However, George managed to force his way back in, grabbing a kitchen knife and stabbing Acevedo multiple times.

Unfortunately, Acevedo succumbed to his injuries at NYC Health+ Hospitals/Lincoln.

After the incident, George fled the scene and was later apprehended in Massachusetts on October 17, 2022. He was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter.

DA Clark expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “This sentence brings justice for the victim and his family, as the defendant brutally took the life of a man who was only trying to help.”

Domestic violence remains a significant issue affecting millions, with an estimated 10 million individuals impacted in the U.S. each year. For those seeking aid, resources are available.
