Owen Cooper just made a splash in the Emmys history books!
On Sunday night, this 15-year-old star of Adolescence snagged the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series or TV Movie. With this win, he became the youngest guy ever to take home an acting Emmy!
He broke a record that was previously held by Scott Jacoby, who was just 16 when he won for Best Supporting Actor back in 1972 for That Certain Summer.
Cooper went head to head with some tough competition, including his co-star Ashley Walters and big names like Javier Bardem (from Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Rob Delaney (from Dying for Sex), and Peter Sarsgaard and Bill Camp (from Presumed Innocent).
In Adolescence, Owen plays Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old student whose life crumbles when he’s accused of murdering a classmate. This four-episode series delves into how these shocking allegations turn his family’s world upside down, bringing to light every parent’s worst fear.
Owen’s TV dad, Stephen Graham, also received an Emmy nod in the Best Actor category for the same show, while Jamie’s mother and psychologist, played by Christine Tremarco and Erin Doherty respectively, were nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The series itself was also in the running for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
It’s been a fantastic awards season for Cooper. He scored his first Emmy not long after winning Best Supporting Actor at the Gotham TV Awards last June.
Reflecting on his historic Emmy nomination last month in an interview with People, he shared, “It’s just crazy, really. Being the youngest in my category hasn’t even sunk in yet, to be fair, but it’s pretty wild to think about.”
Cooper poured out his excitement, saying, “This is my first role — it’s hands down going to be the best role of my life.”
