The suspect linked to the murder of conservative figure Charlie Kirk is reportedly “not cooperating” with law enforcement, as revealed by Utah Governor Spencer Cox and various sources within the police.
During appearances on Sunday TV news, Governor Cox emphasized the ongoing efforts to determine a motive behind the incident and mentioned that a clearer picture may emerge when Tyler Robinson, the suspect, enters the courtroom this Tuesday.
According to Cox’s discussion on CNN’s “State of the Union,” he said, “We’re uncovering a lot more details, and we expect to learn even more soon. Official charges will be announced on Tuesday, alongside additional evidence. We’re in the process of interviewing everyone close to him to understand what may have driven this terrible act.”
Charlie Kirk, aged 31 and a notable conservative activist who co-founded Turning Point USA, was fatally shot last Wednesday while speaking at a public debate at Utah Valley University. He leaves behind his wife Erika and their two young children.
Robinson was taken into custody on Friday and is charged with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and discharging a firearm leading to serious injury, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office inmate booking record.
Authorities have characterized the shooting as a “targeted attack,” prompting strong reactions across the political spectrum. Governor Cox, a Republican, condemned the escalating rhetoric on both parties, stating, “This isn’t about politics for me. Even if this attack had been carried out by a radicalized MAGA supporter, I would still express the same concerns.”
Interestingly, investigators have found evidence suggesting Robinson harbored leftist political views and held animosity toward Kirk based on testimonies from his acquaintances and family members, as noted by Cox during his CNN interview.
In relation to the case, Governor Cox mentioned that Robinson’s partner is transgender, remarking, “The roommate, who is a male transitioning to female, has been highly cooperative and had no foreknowledge of his plans.”
Public records indicate that Robinson is registered as an unaffiliated voter but has not participated in the last two elections, having been ineligible to vote in 2020 due to his age. Notably, he has no previous felony or misdemeanor convictions or violent crime history, according to a report filed in Utah state court.
Tyler Robinson spent his formative years in St. George, Utah, and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his childhood, as shared by church representative Doug Andersen in conversations with the Associated Press.
The ammunition linked to Kirk’s murder had disturbing engravings with derogatory anti-fascist slogans and meme culture references. Some court records even detail a bullet casing that bore the cryptic message, “Hey, fascist! Catch!”
