Hollywood is feeling the sting of loss after the passing of Robert Redford, with many of his friends and former co-stars sharing heartfelt tributes.
Jane Fonda, who starred alongside Redford in various films over the last five decades, expressed how deeply this news affected her. At 89 years old, Redford’s death left her shattered. She shared with CNN, “I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”
The duo made magic together starting in the 1966 film The Chase, featuring Marlon Brando, and shortly after in the classic romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park penned by Neil Simon.
They reunited for The Electric Horseman in 1979, immersing themselves in the rodeo lifestyle. Fast forward to 2017, and in Netflix’s Our Souls at Night, they once again portrayed characters forming a connection as widowed neighbors, exactly 50 years after their first collaboration.
Meryl Streep, who featuring in the 1985 film Out of Africa alongside Redford, also shared her thoughts. In a touching message, she told CNN, “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.”
Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman, who shared the screen with Redford in two films, cherished their working relationship. He stated, “There are certain people you know that you’re going to click with. After collaborating with Robert Redford on Brubaker in 1980, we instantly became friends,” adding that working together on An Unfinished Life was truly fulfilling. He concluded, “Rest peacefully, my friend.”
Beyond films, Redford was also known for his dedication to environmental issues, having settled in Utah back in 1961 and advocating for the preservation of its stunning landscapes.
He passed away at his Sundance home in the Utah mountains—his beloved sanctuary—surrounded by loved ones. Cindi Berger, from Rogers and Cowan PMK, remarked, “He will be missed greatly.”
Reporting contributions from CNN’s Tricia Escobedo enriched this tribute.
