(KRON) – An East Bay man, sought by authorities for nearly four years on an attempted murder charge, has been taken into custody, the Newark Police Department confirmed on Friday.
The individual in question, Terry Franklin, age 28, is accused of engaging in a gunfight with another individual on May 25, 2021, near the 37000 block of Saint Matthew Drive in Newark. When police arrived, they did not find anyone at the scene.
Around 9:12 PM that evening, another police department nearby responded to a vehicle accident and discovered the driver suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim received emergency surgery at the hospital and has fortunately made a full recovery.
“Detectives discovered that gunfire was exchanged between the two men, during which the victim was hit,” stated Newark PD. “The injured person managed to get into their vehicle and fled the scene while Franklin continued shooting.”
After the incident, law enforcement issued a warrant for Franklin’s arrest. He reportedly left California, managing to avoid capture for over four years.
On August 13, 2025, Franklin was arrested by a Bay Area law enforcement agency while they were conducting a separate investigation. The Newark Police took custody of him on September 3, charging him with attempted murder and other firearm-related offenses linked to the 2021 shooting.
