On a tense Tuesday morning, gunshots rang out at the home of Illinois state Senator Meg Loughran Cappel (D) in Shorewood, IL. Luckily, Cappel and her family emerged unscathed from the alarming situation.
In a heartfelt Facebook update posted the next day, Cappel shared her feelings about the incident, calling it ‘deeply troubling.’ She extended her gratitude to Shorewood’s Chief of Police Phillip Arnold and the dedicated law enforcement team for swiftly detaining a suspect and diligently investigating.
‘I’m relieved that no one got hurt,’ Cappel remarked, reflecting on the fragility of peace and safety in our communities, stating, ‘Violence is never the solution.’ She later mentioned in another Facebook post that law enforcement determined this event was not politically motivated.
The Shorewood Police Department disclosed in a Tuesday Facebook update that they had a report come in at 6:50 a.m., stating shots were fired in the vicinity. When officers arrived, they found evidence that three shots had struck a residence, apparently fired from a small-caliber gun. Additionally, another resident reported hearing gunshots, later discovering damage from a single bullet at their home.
The police released a statement saying, ‘Based on the evidence from both locations, and with the collaboration of local, state, and federal officials, the firearm connected to both incidents appears to be the same, pending lab confirmation.’
Thanks to surveillance video shared by neighbors, investigators swiftly identified both the vehicle and the suspect involved, ultimately making an arrest later that day.
Since taking office in 2020, Cappel has represented Illinois’s 49th District, just outside Chicago. Illinois Senate President Don Harmon (D) expressed his relief, stating, ‘I am grateful that Senator Loughran-Cappel and her family are safe. She has our full support as police continue their investigation.’
The Hill has sought comments from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) and Senate President Harmon following this unsettling event. Pritzker previously mentioned a rise in threats to his office after the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk last week.
This shooting incident accentuates growing concerns among congressional members regarding their safety following a surge in violence, particularly after the murder of educator Kirk. House Speaker Mike Johnson remarked that discussions about increasing funding for member security have delayed ongoing talks about the government’s financial resolution.
This case of Senate Loughran-Cappel comes on the heels of the heartbreaking shooting of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, highlighting the urgent need for discussions around the security of officials. The accusations against suspect Vance Boelter, linked to the Hortman case, entered a plea of not guilty to federal murder charges last month.
