Pete Davidson knew he needed some tough love to find his way back. This Saturday Night Live star has been off substances for over a year, and recently, he revealed how his mom, Amy Waters Davidson, played a huge role in his recovery.
During a recent spot on Theo Von’s podcast, Pete recounted a pivotal phone call from his mom that hit him hard: “My biggest fear is that I will turn on the news and I’ll see that my son has died.” Wow, right?
For someone like Pete, who’s gearing up to become a dad himself with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, it was a wake-up moment. He admitted, “That killed me. So I was like, ‘Alright, can’t die until she’s dead.’” Heavy stuff—but it made him think twice about where he was headed.
The comedian has been grappling with loss since his dad, Scott Davidson, was tragically taken during the September 11 attacks, and he doesn’t want his mom to go through any more pain.
He noted, “I’d have to be a f–king sociopath to not get my s–t together.” It’s true; having a support system like his mom and sister Casey Davidson, who’s 28, has been crucial for his journey towards sobriety.
Pete looked back on how his past behavior affected his close relationships. “Anyone who actually loved me received my worst attitude,” he admitted, revealing just how tough things were for him. But the realization hit him that his loved ones weren’t going to put up with his justifications for his “deranged” actions.
Reflecting, he said, “Oh s–t, you’re calling my bluff,” showing signs of genuine change and growth. Today, Pete is grateful to say that his hardest moments have led to a beautiful present and an exciting future.
As he prepares for fatherhood alongside Elsie, he feels thankful to be sober. “Thank God I’m sober and where I am,” he expressed. Planning for his family has been a long-standing dream for Pete, and he’s clear that achieving it without sobriety was simply impossible.
