Spotify is fully aware that AI music is taking over its platform. To tackle this growing issue, the company is rolling out new measures aimed at cleaning up the music library while also protecting artists, songwriters, and listeners’ experiences.
Artificial intelligence is everywhere nowadays. With tech giants like Google and OpenAI consistently churning out innovations like ChatGPT Pulse and Gemini Pro 2.5, we can only expect more AI-generated content in the future.
And it’s not just those big names; many others are joining the AI music bandwagon. Services such as Suno provide accessible ways to generate music via AI prompts. However, this frantic development often leads to a plethora of low-quality content. That’s precisely where Spotify sees the necessity to step in and clean up the mess on its music streaming platform.
Steps Spotify is Taking Against AI Content
In a recent blog post shared on the official Spotify platform, the company admitted, “At its worst, AI can be tricked by malicious characters and content farms, leading to confusion for listeners, drowning the system in ‘slop’, and stealing opportunities from genuine artists trying to thrive. Furthermore, this troubling AI content deteriorates the user experience and can wrongfully divert royalties to those who don’t deserve it.”
To respond to these escalating concerns, Spotify has decided to take a multi-pronged approach. Initially, they are set to tighten their rules related to impersonation with a newly defined impersonation policy concerning AI voice replicas. Additionally, Spotify plans to roll out a spam filter aimed at pinpointing uploaders and tracks that cheat the system using AI in improper ways. This initiative aims to mitigate the influx of AI-generated material to the service.
Moreover, the blog specifies that Spotify will require artists to explicitly disclose their use of AI in creating music, adhering to industry-wide credit standards. This process includes collaboration with the nonprofit organization Digital Data Exchange (DDEX) to shape a set of guidelines for AI disclosures in music credits.
