Fatal Shooting in Decatur Linked to Burglary: Suspect Had Criminal Background

UPDATE: In a tragic incident in Decatur Sunday evening, a man was fatally shot during what authorities believe was a burglary attempt. A full background check revealed that the suspect had an extensive criminal record, according to FOX54.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn confirmed the victim’s identity as 46-year-old Narado Brinkley on Tuesday.

The police responded to reports of the break-in at around 7:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of 22nd Avenue SW. A woman called to report the incident, mentioned that she had shot the intruder, and officers arrived to find Brinkley with fatal gunshot injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

According to state records, Brinkley had a history of serious offenses, including first-degree robbery, drug distribution, and third-degree burglary, among others, as well as multiple probation violations. His last prison sentence lasted five months due to a 2023 conviction related to drug and burglary charges.

In a statement from the Decatur Police Department, the alleged shooter has been cooperative with authorities and has been released without charges. The investigation remains active and will be forwarded to the Morgan County District Attorney’s Office for further legal review including Grand Jury proceedings.
