In a heartbreaking turn of events, renowned R&B and soul artist D’Angelo has passed away at the age of 51. According to his family, he leaves behind a “legacy of extraordinarily moving music” forged during his “prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.”
Born Michael D’Angelo Archer, the singer was, without a doubt, a colossal figure in the music industry.
In a family statement shared, they lamented, “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life. After a prolonged and brave fight with cancer, we are utterly heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known worldwide as D’Angelo, has been called home, leaving us today.”
His family believes that his music will resonate for generations. “We are devasted that all we have left are cherished memories, but we are forever grateful for the legacy of powerful and emotional music he has given us,” they added.
In their plea for privacy, the family encouraged fans to join them in not only mourning his passing but also in celebrating the incredible gift of music that he shared with the world.
D’Angelo’s rise to fame took off in the 1990s, particularly with his debut album “Brown Sugar.”
The hit “Lady”, featured on that album, peaked at No. 10 on the charts back in March 1996 and lingered for 20 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100.
