Tyran Young, a 38-year-old from Sarasota, has received a hefty 40-year prison sentence along with 20 years of probation for a disturbing shooting incident from 2019. The target? Paramedics from the Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD).
This isn’t Young’s first trip to the legal rodeo—he’s a thirteen-time convicted felon. This particular shooting was part of a convoluted plan to play the legal system, hoping for leniency on some other felony charges he was facing.
It all went down on January 7, 2019, when SCFD paramedics rushed to respond to a 911 call about someone who supposedly fell at 2932 Goodrich Ave. When residents insisted that they hadn’t made the call, the paramedics decided to leave. At that moment, Young opened fire on their ambulance, hitting it twice but miraculously causing no injuries.
Charges and Conviction
Eventually, Young faced several serious charges stemming from this incident:
- Two counts of aggravated assault on a firefighter
 - Shooting into a vehicle
 - Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
 - Unlawful use of a two-way communications device
 - Misuse of 911

Investigators unearthed shocking evidence that Young masterminded the entire event, absurdly trying to pin the blame on a younger relative while claiming this kid was spurred on by a family tragedy involving first responders. His smartphone search history provided clues connecting to the automated 911 call made that day, including a similar “practice run” a year earlier.
Stalling Tactics
The prosecution, guided by Assistant State Attorney William Greiner, confronted plenty of delays as Young tried every trick in the book to stall his trial. From faking incompetence to attempting to represent himself, he played every angle possible. Keep in mind, he was supposed to start a one-year sentence for different charges the day after the shooting—perhaps revealing why he felt so desperate to avoid it.
After what felt like an eternity filled with hearings, Young ultimately entered a no-contest plea to all charges on August 11, 2025. Just weeks later, he tried to backtrack, claiming he was coerced into his plea. However, this pathetic excuse fell flat in light of testimonies that showed he had been calculated all along.
During the sentencing on October 6, 2025, emotional testimonies came from the victims and even the young person Young attempted to frame.
In a pointed remark during sentencing, Assistant State Attorney Greiner emphasized the absurdity of Young’s actions: “Tyran Young seems to think he’s smarter than everyone else. It’s ironic that he ended up with a 40-year sentence to dodge one year in jail—definitely an impressive mental gymnastics act!”
As it stands, Young is still in the Sarasota County Jail, awaiting his transfer to the Florida Department of Corrections where he’ll kick off his long sentence.
