KANE COUNTY, Ill. — In a shocking turn of events, the former police chief of Campton Hills and several officers have been linked to a scheme involving the sale of firearms from the department’s evidence room.

The quarter, which includes ex-police chief Steven Millar, is now battling numerous charges stemming from a grand jury indictment.

Millar himself is in deep trouble, staring down five counts for providing a firearm before the legally required 72-hour waiting period, alongside two theft counts, a whopping 22 counts of official misconduct, wire fraud, along with nine counts of forgery, and money laundering.

Between January 2018 and February 2023, he allegedly pilfered various weapons including a handgun, a revolver, two rifles, and a shotgun from the evidence locker. Furthermore, he reportedly sold these stolen guns and even forged police documents to dodge detection.

Alongside him, current Campton Hills officer Douglas Kuick is facing accusations of theft, two delivery charges related to firearms before the waiting period, two official misconduct counts, money laundering, and wire fraud as well. He is believed to have stolen and sold a handgun and a revolver.

Another former officer, 57-year-old Steve Coryell, faces charges including two thefts, four counts of official misconduct, and more, signifying a serious breach of his role. He too has allegedly been involved in pilfering firearms, although the specifics on the exact number remain unclear.

The investigations have also brought former officer Daniel Hatt, 65, into the spotlight with allegations of two counts of official misconduct, along with money laundering, forgery, obstructing justice by destroying evidence, and wire fraud.

This whole case is being thoroughly looked into by the Illinois State Police. All four individuals turned themselves into the Kane County Sheriff’s Office Thursday morning and were subsequently released under specific conditions.

Mark your calendars: they are set to return for their next court appearance on December 12th.
