The notorious days of Premier League footballers indulging in drinking and smoking seem to be a thing of the past, with many embracinghealthier habits and lifestyles.
For Thomas Robson-Kanu, who played for Reading and West Brom, a focus on nutrition and overall wellness lies at the heart of his healthy living philosophy.
He notes that a major reason for this shift is the increase in knowledge and research surrounding health and wellness.
At the age of 36, the former Premier League athlete created The Turmeric Co., which offers functional drinks made with natural ingredients like turmeric.
These potent shots are known for helping with recovery and reducing inflammation problems.
In an exclusive chat with Metro, Robson-Kanu pointed out: ‘When I reflect on the last seven or eight years since we launched our product, and even further back to when I kicked off my career 20 years ago, the changes in lifestyle and cultural attitudes toward wellness, health, and recovery are massive.’
‘I believe this is intrinsically linked to a better understanding and ongoing research into the benefits of nutrition, health, and functional ingredients.’
Robson-Kanu shared that his father developed a blend nearly two decades ago aimed at easing his pain after suffering from knee issues following two serious surgeries at the age of 17.
Why Choose Turmeric?
Studies from Johns Hopkins Medicine indicate that turmeric can ease inflammation and various health conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, arthritis, and even anxiety. These supplements can also reduce the impact of over-the-counter pain relievers.
Together, father and son explored natural components with anecdotal benefits for pain reduction, including pineapple, watermelon, pomegranate, and turmeric.
Robson-Kanu took these shots every day and found himself “completely pain-free” in just six weeks.
“Reflecting back, no one truly understood the difficulties I faced in reaching the Premier League,” he commented. “I relied on that blend as my secret weapon throughout my entire career, allowing me to recover faster than everyone else. To this day, I rarely get sick—I’m almost immune to flu!”
According to a recent survey by the Professional Footballers’ Association, about two-thirds of players reported that they suffer mentally due to fears of injury, which can dramatically impact their careers and financial prospects.
Dr. Michael Bennett, director of player wellbeing at the association, pointed out, “The results from our survey indicate that off-pitch issues like injuries and performance impacts are affecting players’ mental health.”
Across the footballing world, prominent figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane have also embarked on healthy lifestyle advocacies. In 2023, Kane collaborated with the FA to create the Greater Game initiative aimed at equipping young individuals with tools to live healthier lives.
Ronaldo has even established a wellness clinic in Riyadh to support local men facing hair loss issues.
Not far behind is Erling Haaland, who recently debuted a YouTube channel, featuring a “Day in the Life” film that lets viewers see his culinary skills alongside partner Isabel.
“People only see the matches, goals, and celebrations; they don’t see what goes into preparing for them,” said Haaland. “This video showcases my daily routine, the food I prefer, recovery steps, and the little details that matter.”
Does Robson-Kanu Enjoy Cheat Meals?
When asked by Metro if he indulges in cheat meals, Robson-Kanu responded: “I definitely avoid McDonald’s—that’s a no-go for me. I aim to lead a balanced lifestyle, allowing myself some treats occasionally. I enjoy a good Indian meal every once in a while.”
Mental health is equally important in living a nourishing life, according to Robson-Kanu.
He recently visited the Teesside Erimus football team, formed in 2022, designed for players with a BMI over 27.5.
The team chairman, Martin Walker, found his inspiration in Robson-Kanu during his recovery from an ACL injury where he was told he might never play again.
Robson-Kanu’s turmeric shots were instrumental in supporting Martin throughout this journey, especially when it came to alleviating pain after he gained weight from being inactive.
As a result, these players have collectively shed over 3,000 lbs and are on a winning streak, remaining unbeaten for 16 matches.
Robson-Kanu praised Emirus FC as a fantastic example of men supporting each other’s mental well-being.
He remarked, “During our conversation, the chairman shared his recovery story after major knee surgery using the turmeric shots. Leading this team has provided a platform for men who typically aren’t able to discuss their struggles openly.
Seeing their commitment and the impact this movement had on their wellness and mental health has been utterly inspiring. We made a five-hour journey to Teesside just to meet these incredible individuals.
Dream Team Lineup
Robson-Kanu shared his fantasy five-a-side team which includes:
- Ronaldo (R9)
- Ronaldinho
- Zinedine Zidane
- Paul Scholes
“Witnessing such a commitment toward health from individuals on their personal wellness journeys as well as the testimonials of how joining this team has transformed their lives—from wellness and physical fitness to mental health—was incredibly humbling.
“Family, friendships, and colleagues are crucial in our lives. Often, we overlook just how important these relationships are, especially while everyone rushes through daily schedules. But having strong connections is the first step towards better mental health.”
