CNN host Abby Phillip recently took a stand against critics who questioned her decision to feature MAGA-oriented guests on her show. She argued that it’s crucial to acknowledge the significant presence of the MAGA movement in the current political landscape of the United States.
During a conversation about civil rights icon Jesse Jackson, radio host Charlamagne tha God made a light-hearted comment, suggesting that Phillip coordinates a “rainbow coalition” by bringing together a range of voices. Phillip defended this approach, asserting that it serves the public interest well.
“Many people seem quick to say, ‘She shouldn’t give platforms to this person,’ or ‘She shouldn’t do that.’ It’s easy to critique when you’re just sitting at home catching highlights on your phone,” she remarked in response to her online detractors.
She continued with her argument saying, “I often hear from folks on the left questioning why I feature MAGA guests, and my response is simple—it’s important to be informed about what they are saying.”CHARLAMAGNE SLAMS ‘THE VIEW’ FOR A LACK OF RIGHT-WING VOICES
“Absolutely, I agree with that,” Charlotte responded.
Phillip pointed out that a surprising takeaway from her show is how unaccustomed some people are to being challenged. They seem unprepared when confronted with differing opinions, often leading to shock when confronted with disagreement.
Later, during her interview, Phillip referenced a heated exchange she had with fitness guru Jillian Michaels, who has a Black adopted daughter, regarding the legacy of slavery in the U.S. In past comments, Phillip has referred to slavery as America’s “original sin.”CNN JOURNALIST ADVOCATES FOR LIBERALS TO RECOGNIZE THEIR ROLE IN CANCEL CULTURE
In her conversation with Charlamagne, Phillip also stressed the importance of providing a platform for controversial views, stating:
“It’s not beneficial to act like many people don’t resonate with Jillian Michaels. It opens an opportunity for us to correct misinformation, educate, share, and present the facts. Honestly, I’ve spoken with Black individuals who’ve supported her views on slavery perpetually—even 10 or 15 years ago.”
Charlamagne resonated with Phillip’s sentiment about fostering dialogue between varying perspectives, offering an understanding that is essential in today’s fractured media environment.
“Right now, media consumption is so divided. Tons of people on the left are unaware of the narratives in conservative media realms,” Phillip cautioned. “One of the goals of our show is to bridge those knowledge gaps, ensuring all voices are heard to avoid shock during elections when such a different reality hits. By then, it might already be too late.”
