Surprising Big Hits
Sometimes hit songs spring from unexpected places, and for Quavo, this was the case when Migos dropped “Versace” back in 2013.
Quavo’s Conversation with Rey Mysterio
During a chat with WWE superstar Rey Mysterio for the segment GOAT Talk at ComplexCon, Huncho shared his reservations about the track. Initially, he wasn’t sure about pushing “Versace” out into the world, despite it eventually becoming their defining anthem.
Doubts Before Release
“I thought dropping ‘Versace’ might be a risky move,” he confessed. “In the studio, we were just throwing ‘Versace, Versace’ out there, and I figured folks might say, ‘What the heck are you guys doing?'”
A Turnaround Moment
Quavo now sees that he was mistaken: “That record flipped everything for us. When Drake jumped on it, I realized sometimes your worst ideas can turn out to be your best. It’s all about taking chances and pushing forward.”
Drake’s Impact
With the help of producer Zaytoven, the trap banger caught Drake’s attention. He backed the song, catapulting “Versace” into the public eye, marking Migos’ first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, where it debuted at No. 99.
A Defining Track of the Decade
Billboard hailed “Versace” as one of the 100 songs that defined the 2010s. Zaytoven reminisced, “I knew the song was already resonating. But when Drake got on it, I thought, ‘Whoa, we’ve got the hottest track now!’” He noted how their music transformed the industry during that period.
