Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a staunch supporter of Donald Trump during her Congressional debut in 2021, is showing signs of a political transformation. Notably, Greene has been vocal about her stance on social media, demonstrating a willingness to challenge the former president’s policies.

Foreign Policy Disagreements

During the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Greene has made headlines by becoming the first Republican to label Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide—a claim Israel refutes. She has urged her fellow Republicans to reconsider arms support to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

In June, as tensions rose between Iran and Israel, Greene took a firm stand against any potential U.S. involvement in the escalating violence, positioning herself apart from Trump’s rhetoric. She further criticized Trump in July for approving continued military aid to Ukraine, stating on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, “MAGA didn’t endorse more involvement in foreign wars.” Greene also expressed her desire for Trump to focus on domestic issues instead of engaging with foreign leaders like Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Opposition to the Spending Bill

In a significant step back from the Trump agenda, Greene rejected Trump’s spending bill in June due to a provision that would block state regulations on artificial intelligence. This bill, which subsequently passed in July, extends past tax cuts and boosts budget areas like immigration enforcement while slashing funding to the Department of Health and Human Services. Greene made it clear that she stands firm against the AI stipulation, emphasizing her voting power in decision-making as crucial.

Addressing the Government Shutdown

As discussions of a federal government shutdown unfolded, Greene didn’t hesitate to also call out her Republican colleagues for failing to tackle rising healthcare costs. During an appearance on The View, she identified a culture of passivity among Republican leaders, criticizing them for not fulfilling their promises.

Concerns About 50-Year Mortgages

Recently, Trump proposed exploring 50-year mortgage options, aiming to offer homebuyers a longer term with potentially lower monthly payments. Yet this plan has sparked skepticism among various policymakers, as some warn of overwhelming interest costs. Greene voiced her disapproval on X, claiming these mortgage terms would disproportionately first benefit banks and lenders while ultimately causing homeowners to pay excessive interest over their lifetimes.

On the Jeffrey Epstein Files

A vote in the House is approaching regarding the public release of government documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. The push for greater transparency largely comes from Democrats; however, Greene is among just four Republicans who have signed the petition to make these records accessible. She stated on X that this release is important not just for justice for the victims but also for maintaining governmental honesty.

In response to Greene’s unflinching critiques of the GOP, Trump remarked that she seems to have “lost her way.” He noted, “I don’t quite get what’s gone wrong for Marjorie. She’s a good woman, but I see matters differently.” Greene retorted online, emphasizing her role as a representative and commitment to serving her district unconditionally.

Political expert Thomas Whalen pointed out that Greene’s sharp pivot is quite strategic, as she recognizes the negative impact of Trump’s budgetary cuts on her constituents. Patterns in political behavior show she’s maneuvering for accuracy and relevance as elections approach, especially in a battleground like Georgia for the midterm elections of November 2026.
