Our Full-Time Journey
Ever since 2022, my family and I have been embracing a full-time travel lifestyle. And no, we’re not loaded, but we definitely know how to make it work without a massive budget.
- Full-time travel is our new normal since venturing out in 2022.
- With some nifty travel hacks, we’re navigating this world on a budget.
- Cooking at home and selecting affordable long-term rentals are key strategies for our savings.
Traveling has always been a passion for me. During my younger years in Scotland and Ireland, I developed a love for discovering new places. Once my wife joined my adventures, we settled on a dream to explore together, especially after starting our family. We made it a goal to involve our kids in this journey, leading us to embrace full-time travel.
Before we left, we sold off or donated about 90% of our possessions. That helped fund our travels and also positioned us better for long-term investments.
Now, we share our travel stories and experiences as content creators. We might not be wealthy, but we’ve cracked the code on leading an adventurous, budget-friendly lifestyle.
Finding Affordable Accommodations
When many think of “budget travel,” images of uncomfortable places often come to mind. We’ve found that splurging on luxuries for trips—especially in accommodation and eating—would have quickly drained our funds. Instead, we prefer the middle ground, where comfort meets affordability.
Airbnb has become our go-to. We often find that rentals are more affordable when we extend our stay to at least a month. This way, we get the best deals by avoiding the short-term rental pricing snags.
The best part about staying longer? Fewer flights and train tickets mean our travel costs drop. Plus, with this more measured travel pace, we stay energized rather than burnt out.
Location Picks Focused on Walkability
Instead of hustling in dense touristic zones, we often stay just outside of them. These spots not only save us money but allow us to see a gentler side of local life—whether it’s kids walking home from school or locals watering their gardens.
We enjoy areas where we can easily walk to grocery stores, bakeries, and cafes, reserving car rentals for day excursions.
How Our Credit Card Benefits Boost Savings
We rely heavily on our Capital One Venture X card. When we have to pay, this card racks up points and miles to cover a significant part of our air travel expenses.
The annual travel credit of $300 offsets a large chunk of the $395 annual fee, and we can use that credit on flights, hotels, or different travel expenses via Capital One’s platform.
Cooking at Home Keeps Meals Budget-Friendly
By booking accommodations with kitchens, we prepare our own meals instead of always going out to eat—which can rack up costs. Cooking for breakfast using local ingredients not only saves money, it’s a delicious way to connect with the local culture.
