In a significant development, Hong Kong’s anti-corruption agency has apprehended eight individuals linked to the renovations of the high-rise apartment towers that were devastated by a massive fire, resulting in 128 tragic fatalities.
The suspects include seven men and one woman, whose ages range from 40 to 63. Among them are scaffolding subcontractors, directors from an engineering consultancy, and project managers overseeing the renovation efforts, according to a statement from the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
On Friday, the agency conducted searches of their offices, seizing crucial documents and bank records. This corruption investigation was initiated shortly after the outbreak of the deadly fire, which occurred on Thursday.
The announcement of the arrests came on a heart-wrenching day, when firefighters discovered dozens more bodies amid the ruin, bringing the total number of deaths to 128, with many individuals still unaccounted for.
