DHS Confronts Letitia James Over ICE Detainers
No description available.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently called for the transfer of thousands of noncitizens who currently have ICE detainers placed against them. They’ve raised alarms about nearly 7,000 others who were let go without any prior notice. Expressing their frustration, DHS pointed out that those who are being detained pose a significant risk to public safety.

DHS reported numerous offenses tied to these migrants, detailing instances where local authorities released them before federal officers could step in.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons spoke out, stating, “These individuals are not just in the country unlawfully, but they’ve also committed severe crimes such as murder, rape, possessing child pornography, armed robbery, and more.”

He pressed further, stating, “Can you confirm if New York plans to abide by these detainers or will these dangerous individuals be allowed to roam the streets of New York again?”

On the other side, representatives from New York Attorney General Letitia James’s office pushed back against the DHS claim, redirecting questions to Governor Kathy Hochul. They argued that policies which limit ICE transfers are crucial for community safety. Despite this, DHS insisted that James needs to uphold the detainers, warning that neglecting them could jeopardize public safety and complicate deportation efforts. Some of those who were released have already faced serious allegations including weapons and sexual assault charges.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin voiced her concerns too, saying, “Attorney General James and like-minded officials in New York are effectively releasing dangerous criminals back into our communities, significantly endangering American lives. We urge Letitia James to reconsider these reckless policies and honor the ICE detainers for over 7,000 criminal illegals presently in New York’s custody. This is a matter of common sense; we shouldn’t let these criminals threaten more innocent Americans out on our streets.”
