Big news in the comedy world! It looks like Bowen Yang is saying goodbye to Saturday Night Live, leaving fans stunned after eight seasons on the show. Reports confirmed his departure on December 19, with his final performance set for December 20, where singing legend Cher will join Ariana Grande as the show’s host.

This week, Bowen took to Instagram to share his thoughts on his unexpected exit, posting a heartfelt message to his followers. His emotional goodbye addressed the incredible experiences he had with his castmates over the years.

In his post, Bowen reflected, “I loved working at SNL, especially with the amazing people there. It was a time when the world seemed pretty heavy, but if you show up to work at 30 Rock, you see the value in that connection.” Multiple pictures from his time on the show accompanied the post, showcasing fun moments with the cast and scenes from iconic skits.

He also shared his gratitude, saying, “Every minute spent there meant a lot to me. I learned my strengths and weaknesses—worst with wigs and some serious life lessons. Comedy is a unique art form that often doesn’t stick the landing until it does. That’s the best part!”

Among many thank-yous towards his fellow cast members, Bowen expressed his appreciation for Ariana Grande, who is set to host the December 20 episode for the third time. He said, “Thanks to Ari for making my send-off extra special.” Notably, Cher will take the stage as the episode’s musical guest.

Bowen concluded with a touching mention of SNL‘s creator, Lorne Michaels: “Thank you for raising the bar and for being a connector in the workplace. The cast genuinely cares about bringing joy to everyone involved. I can’t believe I got to be part of that.” He also jokingly added, “The show doesn’t just happen; I hope I’m still in the game!”

Making history as the first Asian cast member at SNL when he joined in September 2019, Bowen hasn’t given a clear reason for his mid-season exit. However, earlier this year he mentioned to People that he feels there’s more waiting for him beyond this iconic comedy stage.

He had talked with Lorne about his feelings, stating, “Do I have more to do? And he confirmed, ‘You definitely do.’ That means everything. I confessed my worries about overstaying my welcome, and he reassured me, ‘No way! You have a role here. I need you!’” In his powerful parting words, Bowen concluded, “I owe so much of my journey to SNL. The people are beyond great, and I truly cherish everyone involved.”
