Power Outage in San Francisco Leaves 130,000 People in Darkness and Halts Self-Driving Cars

On Saturday, a major power outage hit San Francisco, taking electricity away from about 130,000 residents and businesses and leaving autonomous vehicles stranded 🛑.

As for the cause, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. hasn’t provided details yet, but fire officials shared on X that a fire inside a PG&E substation at 8th and Mission was one of the triggers around 3:15 p.m.

The outage mainly affected the north side of the city, with areas like the Richmond and Presidio neighborhoods as well as locations near Golden Gate Park going dark earlier in the afternoon.

With self-driving cars bogged down in traffic, folks faced significant delays while navigating through the affected areas.

According to the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management, citywide transit disruptions were noted on X. They urged people to skip non-urgent travel and treat non-working traffic lights as if they were all-way stops.

Following the blackout, Waymo paused its autonomous rideshare service, as mentioned in a report by SFGate.

Efforts to reach Waymo did not get an immediate response.

As of 11:30 p.m. Saturday, PG&E stated they had restored power to approximately 95,000 customers. However, around 35,000 individuals were still waiting for their electricity to come back, and the company confirmed that crews would continue working throughout the night.
