Mystery Mammal Found Washed Ashore in England: Officials Raise Concerns

Estimated read time 3 min read

Recently, something strange turned up on the southern coast of England, sending waves of concern through the community. According to Bridport News, a huge, unrecognized mammal was discovered on Chesil Beach, raising alarms for both locals and marine specialists.

What Happened?

On the morning of December 22, beachgoers were met with an unexpected sight. Gill Morrison, who was taking a walk by the seaside with her son, stumbled upon the corpse of this unidentified creature.

“During our walk, we came across a gigantic, dead animal that looked about the size of a large calf,” she recounted. “Many people, including dog walkers and fishermen, passed by, but it seems none reported it.”

Erich Hoyt, a conservationist and specialist who lives nearby, identified the creature as a juvenile Risso’s dolphin, a species that usually resides in deeper waters far north in Scotland.

Why is This a Big Deal?

After assessing photos, Hoyt noted that this Risso’s dolphin had likely been dead for a significant period and was missing a large portion of its dorsal fin. He suggested that storms could have pushed it ashore.

The Met Office had previously forecast significant rainfall due to the approaching Storm Claudia, which did not disappoint, unleashing an extraordinary amount of rain across England and Wales.

The storm reportedly delivered a whopping “month’s worth” of rain, leading to considerable disruptions, including flooding and calls for evacuations throughout the U.K. as mentioned by the BBC in their report on Storm Claudia.

This surge of extreme weather—derived from climate fluctuations—ignited concerns, and European meteorologist Paulo Pinto highlighted the unpredictability of these severe weather events, warning they pose further risks to humans and wildlife alike.

In Scotland last year, a mass stranding affecting 77 pilot whales is thought to have been linked to similar weather-related issues.

Evidence suggested these creatures experienced panic brought on by rapidly changing water conditions.

What Now?

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue team urged that this incident should be recognized and examined properly, though it’s unclear if any follow-up action has been initiated yet. Morrison expressed her desire to alert authorities for public safety reasons but reported that finding someone to address the situation proved challenging.

“We were hoping to draw some attention to this, not just out of respect for the creature itself but for public safety, as it clearly had been there for quite some time,” she stated.
