The annual Christmas Eve concert at the Kennedy Center hit a snag when musician Chuck Redd abruptly canceled his performance. Richard Grenell, the president of the center, penned a letter demanding a whopping $1 million in damages due to Redd’s cancellation, which he linked to the venue’s rebranding as The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.

In an intense letter shared with AP News, Grenell called Redd’s decision to withdraw last minute “classic intolerance,” stating that it has big financial implications for a non-profit making art. He remarked, “Your last-minute cancellation combined with poor ticket sales and donor support has led us to this decision. We will pursue $1 million in damages because of this political statement you’ve made.”

Chuck Redd himself shared how disheartened he felt upon witnessing the name change. He mentioned in an email to AP News, “Seeing the new name online and then on the building just hours later prompted my decision to call off the concert.” This Christmas concert, which featured a number of talented student musicians, had become a cherished holiday tradition for Redd who has graced the stage since 2006. The cancellation deeply saddened him as he reflected on its importance.
