Newsom Hits Back at ICE Over Mass Arrests Controversy

California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom is making headlines again as he speaks out against federal immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles. This follows the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcing that they had made more than 10,000 arrests involving alleged undocumented immigrants.

There has long been a tug-of-war between state and federal authorities about how these immigration enforcement efforts impact community safety. According to DHS, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division has focused particularly on individuals seen as serious criminals.

In a statement, Newsom’s office pointed out, “Their fixation on mass arrests and deportations leads to random and racially-biased immigration raids, bringing significant societal and economic fallout.”

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, however, defended these operations, claiming they have successfully targeted dangerous offenders while challenging Newsom’s stance against federal enforcement strategies.

McLaughlin asserted, “Rather than expressing gratitude to our law enforcement for ridding communities of criminals, Newsom and Bass consistently criticize our courageous officers investigating these cases.”

According to Diana Crofts-Pelayo, an aide to Newsom, the raids unjustly impact American citizens, including hardworking parents, and are a drain on taxpayer resources, especially targeting those legitimately navigating the immigration process, such as U.S. citizens’ spouses.

In response, McLaughlin remarked, “Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have let dangerous criminals run free. Thanks to our dedicated law enforcement, Californians are living in safer communities with these offenders off the streets.”
