While you might think that Elle Macpherson has a lot to thank her DNA for, the supermodel believes she can no longer rely 'purely on genetics for my wellbeing'.

And so, after turning 54 last month, Elle said she needs to make a 'conscious effort to stay in optimum health'.

For the model and entrepreneur, this translates into seven hours of sleep, an alkaline diet, an hour of exercise and a period of meditation daily.

Writing in her monthly column for Get The Gloss, the Australian-born supermodel shared the flat belly tips and tricks she's adopted since turning 50.

While Elle admits it is possible to have a flat stomach in your fifties, there are a few approaches and diet tricks which help.

'I don't do ab workouts per se but most sports activate the core,' Elle wrote in the column. 

'Sugar tends to put weight around the middle so the best exercise in my view is to skip the sugar.'

The 54-year-old said that daily exercise - whatever that may be for you - is important for maintaining a toned physique.
