1. Disneyland, Anaheim

Book the Disneyland VIP tour, at about $565–$830 per hour, it's a good investment. Our guide, Alezandra, was with us for six hours and she had The Power to line-hop, enter secret doors, get us on 17 rides and cuddle with Mickey Mouse, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Cinderella, Snow White and Ariel. Alezandra said what we achieved in a day with The Power would take at least two and a half days at Disneyland on our own. We did all the big rides: Indiana Jones Adventure, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean, without missing the classics such as "It's a Small World" and the Mad Tea Party.

Luxury holidays at budget prices

Luxury holidays at budget prices Room service, spa treatments and poolside cocktails - and you won't believe the price of this place. You’d like nothing more than to treat yourself to a three-course dinner at a resort but it’s hard to justify when you could fill the fridge for an entire week for the same price.

2. Disney's California Adventure Park, Anaheim

Adjacent to Disneyland is the California Adventure Park and isn't for the faint-hearted. It's where you'll find all the big adrenaline rides such as Guardians of the Galaxy (free fall), Radiator Springs Racers (a car race through the desert), Grizzly River Run (white-water rafting) and Soarin' Around the World (a 12-metre-high flight simulation). Also book dinner at Carthay Circle Restaurant, a fabulous old-Hollywood-style place with a SoCal menu, a great California wine list and vouchers for entry to a reserved viewing area to see Paint the Night, the impressive Pixar light show.

3. Anaheim Packing House, Anaheim

Anaheim Packing House, a former citrus-shipping warehouse built in 1919, has been transformed into a two-storey foodie haven. There's a variety of cuisines, so it was easy to please everyone: pho from Sawleaf for the kids, while we enjoyed tacos and margaritas at Urbana Mexican Gastronomy & Mixology. Oh, and an ice-cream from Hans'.

4. Hotel del Coronado, San Diego

The Hotel del Coronado sits right on the Pacific coast. Now a national landmark, when the wooden structure opened in 1888, it was the largest hotel in the world and one of the first destination resorts to attract the rich and famous, who would stay for months at a time with their servants in tow. The Del has been beautifully preserved and looks like an immaculate cruise ship with its swimming pools and balcony restaurants. In 2007, it expanded to create Beach Village, 78 deluxe retreats on the sand. We booked a two-bedroom junior suite, which was heaven — as were the poolside margaritas and guacamole. The cottage has two bathrooms, a kitchen, a hot tub and a huge balcony, from which we watched the sunset.

5. San Diego Zoo Safari Park, San Pasqual Valley

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is often rated one of the best zoos in the world, and offers a Caravan Safari, on which you travel across the fields to see endangered African and Asian species and feed the giraffes. The zoo is beautiful to walk through, and the bird life is jaw-dropping. Plus there's the hit list: African elephants, lions, gorillas, Sumatran tigers and cheetahs. The zoo has been successful at breeding southern white rhinos (97 have been born here since 1972), and during our two-hour tour we met baby rhino Justin (born in February) and his herd. Rhinos are so majestic, and to be able to feed and pat one was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

6. The Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles

Stay at The Beverly Hills Hotel as it pampers kids as well as parents. It's very hard to leave this place, with all the great dining options, the pool (we spent three days by the legendary pool swimming, eating club sandwiches and drinking rosé) and the huge rooms. We did nothing but eat as well. Breakfast was at Polo Lounge daily (I highly recommend the egg-white omelette and avocado toast). The kids loved the waffles and the placemats, which had games and colouring-in pictures on them. Make sure you also have the famous McCarthy salad for lunch or dinner. On our final night, we ordered two soufflés for dessert — banana and chocolate — which I'm still dreaming of.

7. Universal Studios, Los Angles

Armed with knowledge from Disneyland, we bought a Universal Express pass, which enabled us to do all the big rides in five hours, including the unmissable Harry Potter rides, Revenge of the Mummy, Jurassic Park and Transformers. We had a drink at Moe's Tavern in Springfield and bought a wand in Harry Potter world. We had a ball.

8. Chateau Marmont, Los Angeles

This place has always been a hot spot but with Gucci sending Chateau Marmont merch down the runway at its recent Cruise show its going to get even hotter (if possible.) A great place to celeb spot and the hotel also serves a delicious spaghetti Bolognese!

9. Sunset Ranch, Hollywood

Located just underneath the Hollywood sign, the ranch has horses for all levels and has a fantastic two-hour trek through the Hollywood Hills. We rode from the ranch towards Griffith Observatory to take in the mesmerising views of Downtown LA, the Valley and, of course, the Hollywood sign.

10. Huntington Beach

According to surf lore, legendary Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku introduced the sport to the locals here in 1925, and thus American surfing was born. There are monuments of Kahanamoku all over the town, much like the statue at Sydney's Freshwater Beach (Kahanamoku helped to popularise surfing in Australia, too). The beach is vast and you can literally walk for miles. Dinner at Duke's is also a must to watch the sunset over Huntington Beach and the pier.
