A woman has been caught driving with 10 unrestrained children in the Northern Territory.

Police spotted the woman driving on Sadadeen Road in Sadadeen - which is in the state's centre and east of Alice Springs - last Thursday and observed children jumping around in the cabin.

When the vehicle was pulled over on nearby Bagot Street, officers discovered an infant under the age of one sitting on the front passenger's lap.

The driver was fined $5040 and issued 30 demerit points.

Senior Constable Ivan Petrovic said all 10 children were under the age of 16.

"How someone can knowingly drive a vehicle in which their passengers are unrestrained is beyond me," he said.
