An RACQ LifeFlight Rescue spokeswoman said the man in his 20s was climbing off a quad bike when another person in the group accidentally discharged a firearm on Saturday.

The bullet struck the man on the left side of his chest while he was on a property at Leyburn, about 70 kilometres south-west of Warwick.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were called to the incident and met the man, who was driven to the intersection of Murphy and Toowoomba Karara Road at 9.15pm to be treated.

The patient was stabilised on scene by road crews and was then airlifted in a serious but stable condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital by RACQ LifeFlight Rescue.

A critical care doctor and paramedic on board were on board.
