A beloved WA basketballer left in a critical condition after a freak accident on Bussell Highway is fighting for his life in hospital.

Anthony Exeter was driving his wife and two children near Ludlow on Friday afternoon when a boat canopy smashed through his windscreen, hitting him in the head.

The canopy had detached from a boat being towed by a four-wheel-drive that was driving in front of Mr Exeter.

The 41-year-old was seriously injured and flown to Royal Perth Hospital where he is in a critical condition on life support.

“Anthony was a rookie of the year for the Flames in the State Basketball League competition,” he said in a statement on Facebook.

“Anthony was the second Australian to win MVP for the SBL competition.

“Anthony is a devoted father of two young children and he is a greatly respected and admired player and member of the Rockingham Flames family.”

The driver of the white four-wheel-drive towing the boat is assisting police officers with their inquiries.
