The search for a missing kayaker has ended tragically with his body found at Somers on the Mornington Peninsula.

A man was paddling with his friend on the Mornington Peninsula, when he fell from his kayak and disappeared about 11am on Sunday.

The water police, air wing and local police worked to find the man.

They retrieved his kayak and paddle earlier in the day, but it wasn't until 3.30pm that the missing kayaker's body was found in waters off Somers.

The man is yet to be formally identified and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Coast Guard Western Port posted on their Facebook that they worked alongside the Volunteer Marine Rescue Mornington and Hastings and police to find the missing man.

The kayaker's death comes after a deadly summer in Victoria, with Lifesaving Victoria reporting 22 drownings between December 1 and February 4.

This is 10 more than the five-year average from December 1, 2013 to February 4, 2018.

The Mornington Peninsula had 50 drowning deaths between 2007/08 and 2016/17 according to Life Saving Victoria Drowning Report.

There were 77 Mornington Peninsula residents taken to hospital after experiencing difficulty in the sea and the report also found men were 5.3 times more likely to drown in the area than women.
