The court heard Mullen was the elderly dementia patient’s carer and had struck her more than once, with excessive force after becoming frustrated with her behaviour throughout the night.

Mullen had previously denied the allegations against him and pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Ms Hannaford’s former roommate, Meg Rogers had given evidence saying Mullen had come into the pair’s room frustrated over Ms Hannaford pulling cords out that triggered an alarm.

In a statement, Ms Rogers said Mullen said “you’re doing my bloody head in” and that there would be "consequences" if she continued.
