"A young boy … had suffered burns, and it's probably a timely reminder for anyone under the age of 18 to have an adult present when there are fires," he said.

Mr Webb said it was not yet clear exactly how the boy had gotten hold of the flammable liquid, but urged all families to watch bonfires carefully over the long weekend.

"Make sure we keep a fire in a properly constructed pit, don't overload the fire or put flammable liquids on that's going to endanger anyone else," he said.

"Have a slow, calm fire to toast those marshmallows or something similar while you're camping."

Firefighting crews did not need to put out any flames upon arrival, a CFA spokesperson said.
