A teenager who stabbed two students and a teacher at a high school in Sydney's west and threatened a third student with a knife will spend at least four years behind bars for the unprovoked attack.

The 18-year-old, who cannot be named because he was underage at the time, arrived at Bonnyrigg High School on February 2, 2017 with a backpack full of weapons and walked into morning roll call.

Speaking to a psychiatrist, the teenager said he had not followed school massacres from overseas and wanted to be expelled because of deteriorating grades and a belief he had been bullied.

In a letter to the court, the teenager said he was "deeply sorry" and has "much remorse and regret for my actions to the victims".

She sentenced the teenager to at least four years behind bars, with a maximum penalty of six years and nine months, with the entirety to be served in juvenile detention.

Due to time already served, he will be eligible for parole in February 2021.
