Scott Morrison has paid tribute to "great Australian" former Labor prime minister Bob Hawke, who he says made the nation stronger.

Mr Hawke died at his Sydney home on Thursday aged 89, his wife Blanche D'Alpuget confirmed in a statement.

Despite being on opposite sides of the political spectrum, the prime minister has credited Mr Hawke for leading Australia with "passion, courage, and an intellectual horsepower that made our country stronger".
