Two of the state's most reviled killers, Adrian Ernest Bayley and Steven James Hunter, have exchanged blows in Victoria's maximum-security Barwon Prison.

The pair is understood to have broken out into a fight on Friday last week, briefly landing Hunter in hospital.

It's believed Hunter – who is behind the stabbing murders of two young women – was treated for a minor head injury but was returned to his prison cell near Geelong the same day.

Mokbel, 53, was left bleeding from the mouth, head and chest when he was allegedly attacked by two fellow inmates on February 11.

Hunter is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for the murder of Melbourne woman Sarah Cafferkey.

The 22-year-old was stabbed and bashed to death after an argument in November 2012 at his Bacchus Marsh unit. Her body was found in a wheelie bin more than a week later.

Hunter was previously jailed in 1986 for repeatedly stabbing 18-year-old schoolgirl Jacqueline Cecilia Mathews and burning her body in a car.

Bayley is behind bars for the rape and murder of Jill Meagher, 29, as she walked home in Brunswick in the early hours of September 22, 2012.

Meagher's rape and murder made waves across the country. Her killer was on parole for prior sex offences at the time, leading to a public outcry and a tightening of Victoria's parole laws.
