Tasmanian police are investigating the death of a 29-year-old man found with a gunshot wound near Launceston today.

Detective Inspector Kim Steven said the Ravenswood man had been identified as Timothy Matthew Gardiner.

Police were called to a Blyth Street unit complex at 7:50am, where they located the man with a single gunshot to the chest.

"At this early stage of the investigation, any death involving a firearm is treated as suspicious until proven otherwise," Detective Inspector Steven said.

"We are working to determine Tim's location at the time he was shot, as we believe that he received his injuries at another location."

Neighbours said they heard a loud bang hours before police arrived.

Family members of the deceased were at the unit this morning talking to police.
