A South Australian zoo is celebrating the birth of a second newborn giraffe, just weeks after the herd gained its first tiny addition for 2019.

The latest calf was born yesterday and is an important contribution to the zoo’s breeding program, as giraffes remain a vulnerable species in the wild.

Within hours of the baby’s birth, the lanky bundle of joy was up on its long legs and exploring.

“The little calf stood fairly quickly after it was born and now appears to be well-looked after by mum Kinky and the other giraffes,” Monarto Zoo keeper Kat Ferres said.

While the Monarto Zoo herd has grown by one again, it could be days or even weeks before keepers discover if the giraffe is male or female.

The newborn comes just weeks after fellow herd-member Myeisha gave birth to a little boy.

“Myeisha’s baby boy is now about a month old, and with Kinky’s newborn it’s pretty special to see so many different ages and sizes all together,” Ms Ferres said.

“A new baby is always very exciting, but it also makes for a wonderful time to visit and watch as the rest of the herd welcomes the young ones.” The giraffe marks the 46th calf born at Monarto Zoo.

Baby giraffe born at South Australian zoo© Geoff Brooks Kinky, one of the giraffes at Monarto Zoo, SA has given birth to a baby calf, helping strengthen numbers for the struggling breed.

“Giraffes are facing a bit of trouble in the wild, so this little one is already playing an important role as an ambassador for the species,” Ms Ferres said.

Sadly in the last 35 years, giraffe’s numbers have plummeted by more than 50 per cent.

Habitat loss, poaching and civil unrest has seen giraffe numbers drop from 155,000 in 1985 to about 70,000 today.

As a conservation charity, Zoos SA is committed to continuing their successful breeding program to ensure the gentle creatures remain for generations to come.

World's smallest surviving baby goes home 5 months after birth.
The world's smallest surviving baby has been discharged from the hospital five months after she was born at just 23 weeks gestation, according to the hospital. Baby Saybie, who was born in December 2018, weighed just half a pound when she was delivered at the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns in San Diego, according to a press release by Sharp Health. Saybie weighed 5 pounds when discharged. Her mother underwent an emergency cesarean section after she experienced severe pregnancy complications and doctors determined that the baby was not gaining weight and the mother's life was at immediate risk.
