Desperate search is underway for a 15-year-old schoolgirl who has been missing from her family for a week

Desperate search is underway for a 15-year-old schoolgirl who has been missing from her family for a week Sarah Ang, 15, from Melbourne spoke to her family over the phone on Wednesday morning. However, the teenager has not been seen since Friday May 17.

A Sydney mother has received more than she bargained for when she bought a bird cage from a pet store, when she found finding a snake hiding inside.

Raya Du Plooy, from Leppington, had purchased a bird and cage for her three children as a family pet.

It wasn't until they arrived home and were unpacking the bird cage that the rogue reptile slithered out of the packaging and across the floor.

"I went to pick up a screw and I could feel a rush of air on my hand and turned around and there was this baby brown-coloured snake lashing and lunging at me," she told 9News.

Woman relives the shocking moment she woke to find a large snake flicking its tongue into her FACE after it snuck into her bedroom in the middle of the night A Queensland woman who was recovering from a late night flight awoke to the feeling of something 'flicking her face' - but when she opened her eyes she didn't expect to see a snake. © Provided by Associated Newspapers Limited Brisbane woman Sally Stent (pictured) had just landed in Brisbane at 2am the following morning and went home to catch up on some sleep not knowing a python was in her room Sally Stent, from Brisbane, returned home at 2am and went to catch up on some sleep, not knowing a python was in her room.

"It was a shock. There were a few swear words dropped, it got pretty colourful when the shock set in.

"My daughter saw the snake and freaked out and was crying it was just a case of calming everyone down and making sure the snake was okay and capturing that before it got into the boys' toys.

"It was a baby and that was pretty obvious. It was around 40cm long, so its lunge was quite big.

"It was very angry and aggressive and I guess I would be too if I was woken up out of a box I was sleeping in.

"The kids were terrified - they were screaming there were tears. It wasn't a fun situation at all, it just went into a management situation for me to keep everyone calm."

The snake was eventually captured and taken back to the 'Macarthur Pets' store.

The store identified the snake as a Coastal Python that staff say went missing from its enclosure about a week ago, although that information hadn't been passed up to the manager.

"Anyone who works with snakes knows that it can happen, it is not uncommon," staff member Lani Welling said.

"Every now and then you will get a little clever one that probably needs to go into a snap-close hatching tub.

"Generally they will stay where it's warm and will stay in the area of their enclosure. This one was a little adventurous.

"Regarding the staff, they now know to keep me informed when a snake goes missing.

"I've looked into our procedures and I can't see anything we could have done differently to prevent the escape. It literally is when you work with animals things like that can occasionally happen."

Body of NT gyrocopter pilot found after police search croc-infested river from cage

Body of NT gyrocopter pilot found after police search croc-infested river from cage The body of a missing gyrocopter pilot is found by police divers who searched a crocodile-infested river from an underwater cage. James Russell, 48, was reported missing on Thursday after flying his gyrocopter from Timber Creek airstrip, 600 kilometres south of Darwin. It is believed he collided with power lines and lost power shortly after take-off. After five days of searching, the crashed gyrocopter was found in the Victoria River, not far from the Timber Creek airstrip, at 3:15pm on Monday.

The store is not licensed to sell venomous snakes and say this snake would not have caused any harm to the family but have apologised to the family for the fright.

"Absolutely 100 per cent you don't intend to open up packaging and find a snake in there," Ms Welling said.

"I guess I need to make it really clear this is not a dangerous animal, we do not keep venomous snakes in the store - no one was in any danger - it's more of the fright you would get which is understandable.

"We do apologise to the family for that fright."

The six-month-old snake is settling in well back at the store and has also been given a new name.

"She's now been dubbed Reece Slitherspoon, because she's gained a bit of a reputation," Ms Welling said.
