The private plane took off from Southport Airfield about 10 am for a 30 minute scenic flight. It was reported missing at 1.15pm when it hadn't returned. The aircraft is a Yak 52, a Soviet era training aircraft which is often used for scenic flights. It's understood the pilot took a friend for a flight.

The debris was found 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) south of where the plane last made contact, the Air Force said in a statement. The parts were being recovered for analysis to determine if they belonged to the Hercules C-130 cargo plane . The Brazilian Ministry of Defense also said in a statement that one

Australian Maritime Safety Authority confirmed it had started a search and rescue operation.
