A search-and-rescue operation was launched about 3.30pm, co-ordinated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority, and continued into Wednesday night.
The air, land and sea search was to resume on Thursday morning with police bringing in specialised underwater sonar equipment.
Other resources include Polair, the Westpac rescue helicopter, jet skis, all-terrain vehicles, water police vessels and volunteer marine rescue groups.
Resources involved in the initial search included several water police boats, Marine Rescue and Surf Life Saving Queensland vessels as well as a rescue helicopter.
The Australian Marine Safety Authority said the debris was found about 5.30pm on Wednesday.
"AMSA is working with local search and rescue authorities to confirm if debris found near Stradbroke Island is from a missing light aircraft," the statement read.

The Yak-52 aircraft was often used for aerobatics and scenic flights.
