Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said it was the "foggiest time of the year".

"We still have relatively warm waters that give us that extra moisture," he said.

"But this was very thick fog and quite widespread, which is reasonably unusual.

"The fog is expected to linger in the most sheltered valleys and around rivers well into the morning because we're not getting the burning off effect of the sunshine because we've got still a fair bit of high cloud about."

The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued a surf and swell warning for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming.

Sydney is expected to reach a top of 18 degrees today.
